I have taken advantage of having a bit more time to myself
as the school year hasn’t started yet, pretty much all projects come to a halt
during the rainy season, and Gray being gone. This means more trips to Chivay
to use internet, more cooking, more bathing, more reading, and more yoga.
In the mid 1980s a PCV group in Africa made a critical
period time-line for Peace Corps volunteers. It is AMAZINGLY accurate still
today even as the Peace Corps has changed its face very much. According to this
chart…
The issues I am presently experiencing include:
- increased/more
defined work pace
- awareness
of time constraints
- realization
of own limitations
- post
PC considerations
The behavior or reactions I am portraying:
- hyperactivity
or apathy
- procrastination
- self-recrimination
- resignation
- disappointment
- downgrade
achievements
- over-identification
in behavior
the interventions I am probably applying
- visiting
new volunteers
- physical
activity: ‘get in shape’
- focus
on relationships at site
- re-examine
goals and time frame
- apply
for GRE and grad schools
- Explore
work possibilities abroad and/or in-country
Amazingly accurate. When I told Mario I was bathing more,
growing my hair out from pixie to bob, and doing yoga more he just laughed at
me and said, “month 18 syndrome. Everybody in our training group is there with
ya.” As he handed me the chart. To which I responded, “yeah, you and my
cynicism towards the world popped up out of no where, guess that’s what month
18 will do to ya.”
Not looking forward to the concluding months of 20-27 which
include “bridging new and former identity” “moodiess” and “panic” among other
things…
