At three o’clock this yesterday I boarded the bus from
madrigal to arequipa. I met up with The early PCV crowd around 9am when I got
in and we did the Thanksgiving shopping and got the turkey in the local bread
oven.
I was in the kitchen all day. I have to say, Grandma, you
would be proud. I had my fingers in the mashed potatoes, stove-top green bean
casserole (I battered and fried the onions myself, thank you very much), sweet
corn (which was almost impossible to find this morning), mashed potatoes and
gravy. The other volunteers came with absolutely delicious platters as well. It
was a fabulous meal and fabulously fun.
Photos to come
Today was Peace Corps volunteer cram day. We only had a
couple limited hours in the city and we were in meetings together and/or
working and planning all day. We are in the very beginning stages of developing
a “summer camp” that focuses on leadership, health, creativity, and planning
your future for youth all over the arequipa department. There weren’t enough
hours in the day or speed on the internet to get everything done we wanted to.
We all sat around a table with our laptops open for about 10 hours, then I
hopped on the 2am bus back to Chivay.
Today I worked in the Health Post in Chivay again following
up with an ophthalmologist on the post op cataracts patients. They are all
experiencing improved vision, and I have become an expert at eye charts, haha!
