4 Julio 2010

today was my favorite day yet

The Discotec was fabulous. Dancing here is SO much fun. The volunteers are a kind of family. We all got together and danced with eachother and Peruvians in a completely Plutonic fashion. We were just there to let lose and have fun, and we did. We watched out for eachother's safety and rocked out for 3 hours straight.

I had baked cookies yesterday and when I woke up this morning my family was at the table eating the cookies for breakfast around an American flag. It was such a sweet effort to celebrate my country's independence day with me.

We then went to the market i LOVE (photos to come). It is literally tables set up on the street with everything from chicken food, to spices, to fresh cuts of meat, to cheap plastic toys. I LOVE it. I could just walk around in the market for days. We searched and found all the ingredients for pizza. The final item was the hardest to come by: mozzarella cheese. I had to dip into my savings to purchase enough to make 4 pizzas (s/. 21= one day's pay, or $7). I then taught the girls to make pizza from scratch. The crust turned out marvelously, the tomatoes baked beautifully for a sweet sauce, and the cheese was oh-so-worth it. The 6 person family devoured each pizza as it came out of the oven.

I then went back into the city with Libby's family for dinner of yogurt and fruit. We then walked around the city park which turns into a mini carnival every weekend. It was a joy to watch the Papa proudly buy us and his kids candies and popcorn. I was then greeted by the smiling faces of my dad, mom, and grandma via skype when I returned to the neighborhood. What joy!

I could not have been more pleased with my 4th of July Celebration. I represented my country, loved on it, and what my government wants me to do here: integrate, teach, and learn. Even through the castigation from my fellow American's for not attending their 4th celebration. I love my country, and I love that my country allows me to be here in Peru working for them.
